Detroit Red Wings senior supervisor Steve Yzerman tended to the group’s requirement for a world class goaltending prospect by climbing in the 2021 NHL draft Friday to snatch Sebastian Cossa.
Cossa, 6-foot-6, 212-pounder, posted a 17-1-1 record with a 1.57 GAA and .941 save rate in 19 games with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League.

The Wings obtained the pick from the Dallas Stars for No. 23 (from the Anthony Mantha exchange with Washington), No. 48 (second round) and No. 138 (fifth round).

Cossa, 18, is an athletic goalie who moves rapidly from one side to another and from butterfly position to holding up. By size alone, he doesn’t give rivals a lot of net to take shots at (in butterfly represent, his shoulders actually arrive at the crossbar). He’s acceptable at getting to pucks behind his net and making passes to his partners.

He’ll require time to chip away at his game, yet Cossa could be a potential establishment goaltender.
The Wings chosen him over individual goaltending prospect Jesper Wallstedt. He went No. 20 to Minnesota.
